Night time temprature in the viv

Postby Mark on Fri Aug 08, 2008 1:38 pm

Got viv set up at last just moving probe up and down to get set to the correct temp. But wondering how to cool on a night as seems to be recommended as the heat mat regulator does not offer the option of dual settings or a time function. It has been suggested to use a moonlight bulb during the night. and turn the heater mat off. Would this suffice.

Sorry if being a pain but just want to get it right frist time, for snakes sakes.

Normally i just switch the bulb off at night and tem drops to 25c which is ideal really for Royals.

I personally think that a night time bulb will warm the viv as much or even more than a heat mat.

Non of my snakes have their temps dropped at night and they are (touch wood) all in good health and appear to be happy snakes.

Depending on the size of your Royal i would suggest the following

Heat mat till @ 2 ft
AHS or Ceramic bulb with guard 2ft +

I am personally against bulbs as a source of heat as i feel that they are a waste of energy and could (debatable i know) damage your snakes eyes

For lighting i use LED light strips or energy saving light bulbs - and these arent on too often

I don't change the temp at all for night time, just leave the mat on 24x7.

I agree with above about switching to ceramics too.

I do use a red bulb for night viewing (its only 15w though so no heating)
